nichols canyon

An amphitheater-sized slope felt disproportionate and inaccessible. We needed to bring efficient coverage and connection to the height and breadth of the steep slope with purpose and performance.

We accessed some rough-hewn pathways and secured the slopes with not too much fuss, installed an inviting retreat in the form of a secluded but easily accessible deck, high above the house by carving new stairways from the ground up and enveloping it with plants.

Populating the hills with repeat plant themes and loose and tight structured drought-tolerant plants with restricted colors, brought focus and cohesion to the whole. We painted the house and retaining wall a deep warm black to tie them together and give harmony to the plants, air, and water themes.
